The Durham Girls' Choir offers two levels of music study and performance. The junior-level ensemble focuses on basic vocal technique such as posture, vocal breathing and support. Junior choristers learn and perform unison and two-part music in a variety of styles and genres. In addition to a solid foundation, singers will build their understanding of choral music in a positive, friendly environment. Senior-level choristers continue to develop good vocal technique but the focus of this ensemble is building choral skills through performance. Singers develop musicianship through the performance of a diverse range of intermediate to advanced choral repertoire. In addition to performance-based learning, choristers also experience composer and clinician workshops, as well opportunities for travel.
Candidates should have an appropriate tone and should be able to match pitch. Singers do not require prior experience to enter the junior choir, but previous choral or vocal experience is an asset. An enthusiasm for singing and the ability to be attentive during rehearsals are of great importance.
